MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (MLT)

Overview

A Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is a healthcare professional who performs laboratory tests to diagnose and treat diseases. They work under the supervision of Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) and are responsible for collecting and processing patient samples, analyzing results, and maintaining laboratory equipment.

Overall, MLTs play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of various illnesses and conditions by providing accurate and reliable laboratory test results. They work in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, and independent laboratories.

Objectives

The objective of studying Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is to prepare individuals to perform a variety of laboratory tests to diagnose and treat diseases. By studying MLT, individuals can acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to perform laboratory procedures in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.

The following are some of the key objectives of studying MLT:

  • To understand the theory and principles of laboratory procedures, including hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, and immunology.
  • To learn how to collect and process patient samples, perform laboratory tests, and analyze results.
  • To develop skills in using and maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring its proper functioning and calibrating it as needed.
  • To gain knowledge of quality control procedures, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • To understand the importance of maintaining accurate and complete records of test results, patient information, and quality control procedures.
  • To learn how to communicate laboratory test results to physicians and other healthcare professionals, and their implications for patient care.

Enrty Requirement

A minimum of 5 credits passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry and any subject, at not more than two sitting (2) at the SSCE, WAEC or its equivalent.

Programme Duration

The duration for the Programme is 3 years. Each Year having First and Second Semester
