Medical Rehabilitation
Overview
Medical Rehabilitation is a field of study that focuses on restoring and improving the physical and functional abilities of individuals who have experienced injury, illness, or disability. This field includes various specialties such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Medical Rehabilitation professionals work with patients to improve their quality of life, maximize their physical function and independence, and facilitate their return to daily activities.
Objectives
The curriculum of a Medical Rehabilitation program covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Anatomy and Physiology: the structure and function of the human body, including the musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary systems.
- Rehabilitation Assessment and Intervention: assessing patients’ physical and functional abilities and designing interventions to help them achieve their goals.
- Rehabilitation Modalities: understanding and utilizing a variety of rehabilitation modalities, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
- Assistive Devices and Technologies: knowledge of various assistive devices and technologies such as wheelchairs, prosthetics, and communication devices.
- Rehabilitation Research and Evidence-Based Practice: understanding of research methods and evidence-based practice, as well as applying them to clinical decision-making.
- Patient Management and Care: providing patient-centered care, management, and education, including ethical considerations, cultural competence, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
- Clinical Practice and Internships: practical experience in clinical settings under the supervision of experienced professionals.
Enrty Requirement
A minimum of 5 credits passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry and any subject, at not more than two sitting (2) at the SSCE, WAEC or its equivalent.
Programme Duration
The duration for the Programme is 3 years. Each Year having First and Second Semester
Job Opportunities
Upon completion of the program, graduates can find careers in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, outpatient clinics, and long-term care facilities. They can also work in private practice or in education and research. Graduates of Medical Rehabilitation programs may also pursue further education in related fields such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, or speech therapy, or specialize in a particular area such as pediatric or geriatric rehabilitation.
