X-Ray Technician

Overview

X-ray technicians, also known as radiologic technologists, are healthcare professionals who use medical imaging equipment to take images of patients’ internal body parts for diagnostic purposes. The X-ray technician’s job is to prepare the patient for the X-ray procedure, operate the equipment, position the patient in a way that the targeted body part is clearly visible, and ensure that the images taken are of high quality.

Objectives

The curriculum of an X-ray technician program covers a wide range of topics, including:

Radiographic Anatomy: studying the structure of human anatomy to understand the relationship between different organs and structures.

Radiographic Procedures: understanding the technical aspects of radiographic imaging, such as how to operate imaging equipment, adjust settings, and position patients.

Radiation Protection: understanding the risks of radiation exposure, and learning how to protect oneself, patients, and other medical staff from exposure.

Patient Care: developing communication skills to prepare patients for imaging procedures, and addressing their needs and concerns during the process.

Image Processing: developing skills to analyze and evaluate images for clarity, quality, and accuracy.

Radiographic Physics: understanding the physical principles of X-ray imaging and how they apply to different imaging techniques.

Clinical Practice: gaining practical experience in a variety of clinical settings under the supervision of experienced professionals.

Enrty Requirement

A minimum of 5 credits passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry and any subject, at not more than two sitting (2) at the SSCE, WAEC or its equivalent.

Programme Duration

The duration for the Programme is 3 years. Each Year having First and Second Semester

Job Opportunities

Upon completion of the program, graduates can find careers in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, diagnostic imaging centers, and private practices. X-ray technicians may also choose to specialize in specific areas of medical imaging, such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Graduates of X-ray technician programs may also pursue further education in related fields such as radiology, sonography, or radiation therapy.
